Embracing the Future: Patricia’s Journey with Severe Eosinophilic Asthma

My name is Patricia and I live in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, a nice small town here. I have a husband and five children and they’re all grown. My biggest hobby is photography. And that stems from my lifelong love of nature and being in the outdoors. Besides that, I love to cook. And we used to be avid horse trail riders for many years and that was our primary leisure activity. We’ve lived here for thirty years and we’re in the process of building the house for our next chapter on the lake. When I was first diagnosed this was by my primary care physician. I’d gone to him because I was having lots of coughing and shortness of breath. I was a soccer coach for six years and I had to do a lot of yelling, loud yelling to be heard across the field. So, that was kind of hard to do just didn’t always have the breath for it.

Steve:

She’s had the asthma problem for as long as I’ve known her. We love to hike in the woods, and we love to horseback ride, but a lot of the times when her asthma flared up, I would have to do things like saddle her horse for her and things like that. It was difficult. She was in the hospital a number of times. There were times where she was very seriously ill. So we were scared.

Julie:

There were a few times before we figured out what exactly was going on that were pretty scary. My most memorable was a hospital stay for… She went in with breathing problems. And it was my prom, my first prom, and we took all of our prom photos in the hospital with mom’s hospital gown in the hospital room.

Liese:

For about a month, she progressively got worse, and I was very concerned. And then, one of the pulmonologists saw that her eosinophils were unbelievably high.

Patricia:

And then when CINQAIR became available, at that point the doctors said, “I think she would be a good candidate for CINQAIR.”

CINQAIR® (reslizumab) is a prescription medicine used with other asthma medicines for the maintenance treatment of asthma in people aged 18 years of age and older, whose asthma is not controlled with the current asthma medicines. When added to other medicines for asthma, CINQAIR® helps prevent severe asthma attacks (exacerbations) and can improve your breathing.

CINQAIR® reduces blood eosinophils, a type of white blood cell that may contribute to your asthma.

CINQAIR® is not used to treat other problems caused by eosinophils or sudden breathing problems.

CINQAIR® injection can cause serious allergic reactions, or anaphylaxis. These reactions can happen right after your CINQAIR® infusion and can cause death. Allergic reactions sometimes do not happen right away. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you have any of the following:

  • breathing problems
  • paleness
  • flushing
  • skin rash, or hives
  • itching
  • swelling of your face, lips, mouth, or tongue
  • symptoms of low blood pressure such as fainting, dizziness, light headedness, confusion, or fast heartbeat
  • nausea or abdominal discomfort

Please see additional Important Safety Information at the end of this video. Please see Full Prescribing Information, including Boxed Warning, on this website or accompanying this presentation.

Liese:

CINQAIR has made a difference in her quality of life. We went on a trip recently and shopped all day and she wasn’t short of breath, didn’t really have any complaints. So definitely her breathing is definitely better.

Patricia:

I’ve been very lucky throughout any of my difficulties, I’ve had the support of my husband and my daughters.

Steve:

Now that they’ve added CINQAIR to her medication regimen, she has better quality of life, her asthma is under control.

Patricia:

I go in, I get weighed. And that’s a scheduled downtime that I can actually sit and read which I never do, but really would like to. It’s always the same two nurses. I’ve been doing this for over a year and a half so we are friends, and we talk. They’re so nice and so calm and so pleasant. It’s just improved my quality of life in that, I can breathe freely and not have to stop and catch my breath.

Steve:

Yeah, she takes care of me, you know. Even through all her sicknesses, she’s taken care of me. I’m spoiled!

VO:

"CINQAIR® (reslizumab) injection was studied in people with severe asthma and higher than normal eosinophil levels. CINQAIR provided relief as early as 4 weeks, and as many as 3 in 4 people who added CINQAIR to other asthma medicines did not have an asthma attack for one year. In comparison, about half of people who did not add CINQAIR were free of asthma attacks. Adding CINQAIR also improved breathing and quality of life compared to not adding CINQAIR. Please read the following important safety information about CINQAIR."

Do not receive CINQAIR® (reslizumab) injection if you are allergic to reslizumab or any of the ingredients in CINQAIR®. Before receiving CINQAIR®, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you:

  • are taking oral or inhaled corticosteroid medicines
  • have or have had cancer, or malignancy
  • have a parasitic, or Helminth infection
  • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed

Do not stop taking your other asthma medicines, including corticosteroids, unless your healthcare provider tells you to.

CINQAIR may cause serious side effects, including:

  • serious allergic reactions, or anaphylaxis
  • abnormal growth of cells or tissue in your body that may or may not be cancer, or malignancy

The most common side effects of CINQAIR include throat pain.

These are not all the possible side effects of CINQAIR.

Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

On the Frontline: Mark’s Journey With Severe Eosinophilic Asthma

My name is Mark. Born and raised in Michigan, all my life. I enlisted in 1975, Navy, right after I graduated out of high school. Signed with the military for 6 years. And believe it or not, I ended up staying for 26 years. Trained primarily as a dental assistant and my secondary was a frontline medic. And I went with the marines, and served with the marines, for 17 years.

I started noticing a shortness of breath. And having difficulty breathing. I went to one of my medical staff doctors and he thought I might have asthma but wasn’t sure. And then I was diagnosed by my primary doctor of having asthma and that’s when I decided to retire from the military. I worked 20 years for a medical supply company and I retired in December of last year.

The first exacerbation, I didn’t really know what it was. And I just got worse and worse and the tightness in my chest got tighter and tighter. So my wife rushed me to the hospital and I stayed for a couple of days. And then I went home and 3 or 4 weeks later, had another bout with it. I ended up in the hospital. It got worse and worse so they went ahead and intubated me. My wife and family showed up after they had intubated me. My wife took a picture of that and it’s on my cell phone and I look at it every couple of days just to remind myself, I’m going to take my medication and what I have to do every day.

So I see my local pulmonologist here in Michigan. I was referred to out of National Jewish. They drew blood on me and I had come back home to Michigan and he had called me on the phone and told me my eosinophils were very high and that I’d be a great candidate to be put on CINQAIR. The doctor that I see in Dever, Dr. Weschler, called my doctor here in Michigan and they both came to the decision that an infusion could do well for me. To help me breathe better and give me some quality of life back.

Mark:

Teva Support Solutions has been there from Day One. Jen, she is the CNE from Teva Support Solutions. She made everything happen. And I mean everything, where she got my first appointment lined up. She was there to meet me face to face. Explain to us the procedure, step by step. She stayed for the entire procedure until I was done. She called me the next day to follow up with me. If I have a question, I pick up my phone and I call her and she responds back to me within minutes. I have been on CINQAIR now for about 10 months and the thing that I feel best about is I’ve not had any exacerbations or trips to the ER. I still maintain my regimen in my daily inhalers. But now after 10 months I don’t feel those attacks coming on like they were before I started the CINQAIR. I look at life so differently after that experience because you could be here today and tomorrow is not promised. So I try to do everything I can each day to make a change in somebody’s life or in my life.

Caring for the Caregiver: Shelby’s Journey with Severe Eosinophilic Asthma

I’ve lived here in Atlanta all my life, never had a problem with asthma, never had a problem with allergies. I had the symptoms probably about four years ago. The cough became persistent. I ended up going to a pulmonologist and he did several breathing treatments and breathing tests. Based on the results he said that I was allergic to the environment. You know, pecan tree, Timothy grass, pollen, dust mites. I mean you name it.

One of my concerns was, I am a caretaker for both my parents. I spend a lot of time with my great nieces and nephews. I actually had one of my nephews that actually lived with me. And I was responsible for taking him back and forth to school, making sure he ate, helping him with homework, teaching him how to count, teaching him how to write. I’ve also taught him how to spell and he’s only four years old.

When my asthma was uncontrolled it affected my life in a lot of different ways. I mostly stayed in the house. Even the change in seasons was impacting me as far as breathing. The rescue inhalers weren’t working. It was a challenge for me to breathe. So my primary care doctor referred me to Dr. Redding at Redding Allergy and Asthma. Once I got there and I went into the office with him and he discovered, “You’re in bad shape.”

When Dr. Redding mentioned the idea of CINQAIR based on my levels of the EOS, I was like, “Let’s go for it. I’m ready, I mean we’ve tried as much as we could. Let’s try this, see if it works.”

Shelby:

Dr. Redding, he got the approval from the insurance company. I spoke with a representative from Teva Support in reference to CINQAIR and she set everything up. They located the center that I go to, to actually get the infusion. Since it was my first visit there, I actually had to see the doctor to go over what I was getting ready to be injected with and if I had any questions.

After they connect the CINQAIR to the IV, it takes usually about 20 to 30 minutes. CINQAIR infusions improved my quality of life. Since I’ve been on CINQAIR, I haven’t had any severe exacerbations of asthma. I’ve been on it for about eight months. Going on nine months now. I could tell that CINQAIR was working after 4 weeks.

Usually like once a year, there’s a reunion on my brother’s wife’s side. And I’m actually scheduled to go to the Dominican Republic on a weeklong cruise with my family. Since getting the CINQAIR infusion, I’m actually breathing a lot better.
